Filter Media Comparison¶
How the seven common filter-media types compare on structure, efficiency, dust capacity, pressure drop, service life, cost and best-fit applications. The first four (cellulose paper, synthetic fibre, blended, nano-fibre) are the core engine-air / oil media; the last three (activated-carbon cabin, glass fibre, electrostatic electret) are cabin and specialty media.

Micro characteristics by media type¶
Cellulose paper [行业常识]¶
Natural wood-pulp fibre, resin-impregnated for wet strength and pleat rigidity. Fibres are relatively coarse and the pore structure is irregular, so efficiency is inherently lower and moisture can degrade the sheet. Its strength is cost and adequate protection in normal conditions.
Blended (cellulose + synthetic) [行业常识]¶
A mix of cellulose with a synthetic fibre layer improves efficiency, wet strength and dust loading while keeping cost moderate. It is the common middle ground for aftermarket air and oil filters where the balance of price and performance matters most.
Synthetic fibre [行业常识]¶
Non-woven polymer media with finer, more uniform fibres. Finer fibres give higher efficiency and dust capacity, and the material resists moisture better than cellulose. The trade-off is cost and often a slightly higher pressure drop unless the media area is increased.
Nano-fibre [框架参考]¶
An ultra-fine electrospun layer (sub-micron fibres) applied over a substrate forms a dense surface layer that captures very fine particles while the open substrate keeps flow up. It delivers the highest efficiency and dust loading, aimed at premium, long-interval or high-filtration applications.
Activated-carbon cabin [行业常识]¶
A particulate layer plus an activated-carbon layer that adsorbs gaseous pollutants — exhaust fumes, VOCs, and odours — that a plain particulate filter cannot stop. Its gas removal is a finite capacity: once the carbon saturates, adsorption drops even though the particulate layer still works. Best positioned as a premium cabin line for urban markets.
Glass fibre [行业常识]¶
Fine glass fibres give high efficiency, high dust-holding and, critically, a much higher temperature tolerance than cellulose or standard synthetics — suitable for turbocharged, high-temperature or commercial/heavy-duty intake and oil applications. The cost is higher and pressure drop greater, so it is matched to demanding duty rather than normal service.
Electrostatic electret [框架参考]¶
Charged synthetic fibres add an electrostatic capture mechanism on top of mechanical filtration, raising efficiency for fine particles at a comparatively low pressure drop. The charge can dissipate with age or moisture in some constructions, so the efficiency gain should be validated for the target service life before it is claimed on a SKU.
Material × vehicle class / application pairing 小筑 ✍️¶
| Vehicle class / scenario | Engine-air media | Cabin media | Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compact / city car (normal duty) | Cellulose or blended | Particulate (plain) | Cost-appropriate; dust load is light and intervals short |
| Mid-size / premium sedan | Blended or synthetic | Activated-carbon | Balanced performance; odour/VOC control for urban driving |
| SUV / off-road (dusty) | Synthetic | Electrostatic electret or activated-carbon | High dust-holding; high cabin efficiency on unpaved roads |
| Pickup / commercial / turbo | Synthetic or glass fibre | Particulate (plain) | High-temperature and heavy-dust duty |
| Urban / heavy-traffic | Blended | Activated-carbon | Exhaust odour and VOC adsorption is the value driver |
Buying advice 小筑 ✍️¶
- High-dust markets (construction, agriculture, desert, unpaved roads): prioritise synthetic or blended media — dust-holding capacity and moisture tolerance protect the engine longer between services, which is worth more than the unit-price saving.
- Cost-sensitive markets: cellulose is a legitimate, proven choice where dust load is normal and service intervals are short; do not pay a premium for media the duty cycle does not need.
- Premium / long-interval positioning: offer nano-fibre as the "good-better-best" top tier — sell it on total cost of ownership (fewer changes, better protection), not on media price alone.
- Urban cabin line: lead with activated-carbon and sell air quality (odour / VOC / exhaust), not just particulate removal — it is the clearest premium upsell in the cabin category.
- Heavy-duty & turbo: match glass fibre where temperature is the binding constraint; do not use a normal-service media to chase a high-temperature application.
- Whichever media you choose, match it by OE: media grade does not compensate for a wrong panel dimension, seal or bypass-valve specification. Confirm the exact part before ordering — see Fitment Reference.
